Today I want to show you what the three dyes developed last month by Dharma Trading specifically for ice dyeing look like. They were kind enough to send me these three to play with. They are Kaleidoscope Eyes, Alchemist, and Phoenix Flame.
Whenever I use a dye for ice dyeing for the first time, I always dye it the same way and with the amount of dye I calculate per the weight of the fabric dry. If you’d like to know more about how I do this, check out my You Tube channel where you can download my calculator and also watch my video on how to use it. I like to measure the dye because it not only keeps me from wasting so much dye, but my washout uses less water. I’m dyeing these half yards of Test Fabric 400 which weigh 52 grams or 1.9 oz. I put the weight of the fabric (52 grams or 1.9 oz) in my calculator and I get .87 teaspoons. I round that up to 1 teaspoon which I put in my shakers.
I soak the fabric in soda ash water for 20 – 30 minutes, wring out, and then push fold and place in container.
I place the ice on the fabric and then sprinkle on the dye and then wait for usually 24 hours. Waiting is the most difficult part about ice dyeing!!
So here are the results. The first up is Phoenix Flame. I thought I wouldn’t like this, but it’s been hanging in my studio on my design wall for a week and I have come to absolutely love it.
The next is Kaleidoscope Eyes
And then Alchemist
Then I decided to try the inclined twisted ice dyeing technique. Check out this video. I didn’t have the gutter so tried another type of pan which worked but not as well as hers. I’ll be doing much more researched. However, I loved my results. This is the Kaleidoscope Eyes. I love all the green that appeared.
And Alchemist. Love this too.
These are beautiful dyes. The pictures do not do them justice. I had a hard time photographing Alchemist which is much prettier and more blue than the pictures. For one teaspoon of dye, I got lots of color. It seems that they are more potent because they were mixed to breakout. But that may be just me!!
Thanks to Dharma Trading for these dyes. I hear they will be out with new ice dye dyes this week. Yippee!! Looking forward to seeing their new colors.

Interesting color break-outs on the new ice-dyes from Dharma, Lynda! I do like the incline twist results! Just what I need: another piece of “equipment” for yet another method. I can see this method creating some great backing pieces and some wonderful whole-cloth pieces! Thanks as always for sharing and for feeding my fabric-thread-and-yarn dye obsession!!
Wowee zowee!!! These are wild!
The video on incline twist is interesting. I may have to find a piece of rain gutter. What is the purpose of the soda ash over top of the dye?
Jane, You are so welcome! Love to feed someone else’s obsession besides my own!!
Sandra, I have no idea. I did add it but not sure it’s really necessary.
Sherrie, They sure are!!
